Stealth came at the cost of size. While my ship was large enough for one, two was a crowd. After hours of planning, we decided to call it a night. I gave Val my bed, taking the floor in the weapons room instead. It’s because I don’t want her throwing my knives at me. I shifted uncomfortably on the hard floor, the only padding being a sheer blanket. Who was I fooling? The prickly human was growing on me. Honestly, I was impressed with how far she’d made it in this universe. It wasn’t an easy feat. If this mission went well, I would be spending the rest of my days on the beaches of Eirat.

I wonder if Val likes the beach.

I stopped myself there. After this mission, we would go our separate ways. It was the best for both of us. I tossed again, staring at the ceiling, unable to sleep on the cold floor.

Val threw off my morning routine entirely. After tossing and turning all night, I made my way to the bathroom only for it to be occupied. Steam escaping through the door, I knocked once.

“Just a minute!” Val said, opening the door, the heat escaping into the hall.

“Are you trying to boil yourself?” I waved my hand, dispersing the steam.

“I wouldn’t expect an alien with such delicate skin to understand.” She stepped out, wearing only my shirt, our scents mingling. I could get used to this. It was huge on her; the hem reached her knees, leaving only her shapely calves exposed.

“Darling, if anyone is an alien, it's you. You're lightyears away from home.” I shooed her out of the bathroom, craving the heat on my sore muscles. I set the temperature lower and hopped in the shower. Only one more rotation till the heist. I just hoped that Val would be able to make good on her promise.

After my shower, I headed towards the bridge, stopping when the sound of tinkling metal caught my attention. Opening the door to the weapons room, I watched as Val removed a knife from the wall. She tested the weight of it, and with a flick of her wrist she threw it at a crate. With a clank, the knife lodged itself into the metal of the crate. She turned, eyes wide and a smile on her face. “What is this made out of? I’ve never seen a knife cut through metal.”

I pulled the knife out of the crate, inspecting it for any chips. “It’s Alderian obsidian, and it’s mine.” Assuring that it was undamaged, I returned it to its place on the wall.

“I knew Alderians were possessive, but you take it to a whole other level.” She reached for another knife.

I grabbed her wrist, stopping her, my face inches away. Her eyes widened, searching mine for my next move.

“I’ve already been generous enough with my food and my clothes. If you want Alderian obsidian, pay for it yourself.” I let go of her wrist and her face sank a little.
